# Add your students to Kita

Get your students onto Kita and ready to start coding.

***

Kita is designed to get your students coding as quickly as possible. We have based this guide on typical teaching scenarios. The video below outlines your options, the same information is also broken down in the scenarios below.&#x20;

{% embed url="<https://youtu.be/6hA9h7sXJ8Q?si=rl5h2gZ3FWxataWj>" %}

#### Before you begin

* Sign into Kita using your email and password or magic link.&#x20;
* Your account has teacher permissions (**Tiers:** Teacher, Multiple Teachers, School).

#### Add your students: scenarios

Use the tabs below, based on your scenario.&#x20;

* "I am live teaching and I want students to **join my course now.**"&#x20;
* **Recommended:** "I want to to join Kita and enrol on courses **before a teaching session (set up your class)."**&#x20;
* "I want to add students **to the school (individually & spreadsheet).**" <br>

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Join my course now" %}

> "I am live teaching and I want students to **join my course now.**"&#x20;

All courses have a **join code** which refreshes every 30 minutes.&#x20;

This can be used to:&#x20;

* Enable students to join Kita and go straight into the course&#x20;
* Get students who have accounts logged in and into the course&#x20;

### Use the Join Code&#x20;

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Go to **Courses** and click on the **Join Code** for the course card&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FYcYIG3PHhW3Ctua6KHOE%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=4e9af2d6-7503-4c58-8c95-592e04b2aca6" alt="" width="305"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Share the join code onscreen in the room. Click on the code to copy it.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FyURRuwuEbaddlugWUnGU%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=2bf11ac2-92b8-4f56-b7ac-ff6e8daa3f26" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Ask your students to go: \
\
[<mark style="color:pink;">**getkita.io/join**</mark>](https://getkita.io/login/join)  <br>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Students enter the code or if using the link the link is automatically entered. \ <br>

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FmpJWnBpHqHdG3FzViwXS%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=7c50ea8b-b9f7-4e8e-89fa-21bcbd9ca43e" alt="" width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
When the code is recognised the students are shown two options.&#x20;

Select the option that applies:&#x20;

1. **I'm new:** new students are asked for their First name and Last name and then given a temporary password to save. They are asked to reset their password at the end of the classroom session.&#x20;
2. **I have a Kita login:** allows existing students to login and go directly into the course.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FzK2LWSRNaObxoja1de1z%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=35b783f2-d69d-4350-b134-8b3607ed691f" alt="The code has been entered at getkita.io/join and the student is selecting &#x27;I&#x27;m new&#x27;. " width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
The student will be asked for a first name and last name. If you prefer students use a pseudonym or firstname plus initial, those will be accepted.&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
To use Microsoft and Google, Kita needs to be approved by your school IT department unless non-school accounts are used (e.g., personal tutors using Kita). Please get in touch: <support@getkita.com>
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FLMbslbKwkN8wyyVnBYbd%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=3a81cd65-3341-40f1-84f0-69977a4c41ab" alt="The student has added a first name and last name to the setup screen. " width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
The student needs to copy their username and select 'Join course'. They will then be taken directly into the course and lesson.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FJfuZ3pojojcEE4k3QOud%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=2bcdafa6-5bf5-40c4-b124-983b7bccbc9b" alt="The student is copying their username and then they will join the course. " width="375"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### At the end of your teaching session

If you have used direct sign-up, encourage students to log out, they will be given an option to reset their password to whatever they prefer.&#x20;

Students select their avatar on the bottom-left to log out of their account.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FkUiymYJ15ut1qVUwogFu%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=3b736bdf-7899-4397-a4e9-e87be22c4389" alt="Time2Code Level 1 is shown in the Kita IDE and the student is logging out from their avatar on the bottom-left."><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Setup before a class session" %}

> "I want to to join Kita and enrol on courses **before a teaching session.**"&#x20;

Use this method if you would like to set up your class in advance.&#x20;

This is especially helpful when you want students to **join Kita and enrol on multiple courses** in one step.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2F7aooOHSqsHbvMYMaBlOx%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=2931f9be-b6c4-414f-88da-e749f0d4ddd9" alt="Shows annotated screenshot of the Students area on the Classes &#x26; Subgroups tab. # Agent Instructions
This documentation is published with GitBook. GitBook is the documentation platform designed so that both humans and AI agents can read, navigate, and reason over technical content effectively. Learn more at gitbook.com.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.getkita.org/set-up-your-class/add-your-students-to-kita.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
