# Add your students to Kita

Get your students onto Kita and ready to start coding.

***

Kita is designed to get your students coding as quickly as possible. We have based this guide on typical teaching scenarios.&#x20;

#### Before you begin

* Sign into Kita using your email and password or magic link.&#x20;
* Your account has teacher permissions (**Tiers:** Teacher or Multiple Teachers).

#### Add your students: scenarios

Use the tabs below, based on your scenario.&#x20;

* "I am live teaching and I want students to **join my course now.**"&#x20;
* "I want to add students **to the school (individually & spreadsheet).**"&#x20;
* "I want to to join Kita and enrol on courses **before a class session."**&#x20;

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Join my course now" %}

> "I am live teaching and I want students to **join my course now.**"&#x20;

All courses have a **join code** which refreshes every 30 minutes.&#x20;

This can be used to:&#x20;

* Enable students to join Kita and go straight into the course&#x20;
* Get students who have accounts logged in and into the course&#x20;

### Use the Join Code&#x20;

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Go to **Courses** and click on the **Join Code** for the course card \
\
![Shows the course card and a cursor pointing to the Join Code.](https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FKEqdhBuAqpZ10ga3ymjD%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=c08100ca-5fae-4585-b7c8-f36adbad8a52)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Share the join code onscreen in the room. Click on the code to copy it. \
\
![Shows the teacher copying the Join code from share view for displaying in the classroom.](https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FmTInnt7soNK2GFi2OaPC%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=293f8504-2f41-4a5e-9cbe-af1db504385e)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Ask your students to go: [https://getkita.io/*school*/join](https://getkita.io/login/join) \
Replace *school* with your school name–find this in your URL. <br>

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FNby5TC3QG86Www53P1KR%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=af2ba7bf-e897-4727-a60d-475cabcbfe6f" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Students enter the code or if using the link the link is automatically entered. \
\
![Shows the code which has been entered and I'm new being selected by the student.](https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FzUzw7kxGQ6MOInSGWZ0k%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=b4bd6551-4cde-44c1-a1d4-5f79a74bd687)
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

Select the option that applies:&#x20;

1. **I'm new:** new students are asked for their First name and Last name and then given a temporary password to save. They are asked to reset their password at the end of the classroom session.&#x20;
2. **I have a Kita login:** allows existing students to login and go directly into the course.&#x20;
   {% endstep %}
   {% endstepper %}
   {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Add students to the school" %}

> "I want to add students **to the school (individually & spreadsheet).**"&#x20;

### Add an individual student to the school

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Prepare and upload a CSV file with one row per student, using these column headings.

```csv
First name,Last name,Temporary password
Jordan,Lee,
```

{% hint style="info" %}
You can define a temporary password, or leave it blank for Kita to assign temporary passwords.&#x20;
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Upload the completed CSV file.&#x20;

If you encounter errors check the row identified in the status (as indicated). Lookout for non-character spaces after a names or column titles.&#x20;

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FxEKmhJsJMZcz55kUsnSl%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=6ac00ae7-ab64-48b0-8444-b11fecd89905" alt="In the upload area for the list an arrow points to the status showing valid rows in the sheet." width="188"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

{% hint style="info" %}
If students forget their password, Teachers can reset at any time from the **Students** page.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Setup before a class session" %}

> "I want to to join Kita and enrol on courses **before a class session.**"&#x20;

Use this method if you would like to set up your class in advance.&#x20;

This is especially helpful when you want students to **join Kita and enrol on multiple courses** in one step.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FTKr2kCbepkgmSQQM40pA%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=5c2db09c-c733-44a6-a327-f3a6afcc0104" alt="Shows annotated screenshot of the Students area with Manage Groups &#x26; Sub Groups tab selected. {% hint style="info" %}
You can also add fellow co-teachers in this step.&#x20;
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="https://1176288822-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fjzm9nyD2lhxeWS1B64j9%2Fuploads%2FPSccy98obw7P9hwbuwRP%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=4af59dcb-23f9-4127-bcb0-c1191268f4c6" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.getkita.org/getting-started/add-your-students-to-kita.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
