Add your students to Kita
Get your students onto Kita and ready to start coding.
Kita is designed to get your students coding as quickly as possible. We have based this guide on typical teaching scenarios.
Before you begin
Sign into Kita using your email and password or magic link.
Your account has teacher permissions (Tiers: Teacher or Multiple Teachers).
Add your students: scenarios
Use the tabs below, based on your scenario.
"I am live teaching and I want students to join my course now."
"I want to add students to the school (individually & spreadsheet)."
"I want to to join Kita and enrol on courses before a class session."
"I am live teaching and I want students to join my course now."
All courses have a join code which refreshes every 30 minutes.
This can be used to:
Enable students to join Kita and go straight into the course
Get students who have accounts logged in and into the course
Use the Join Code
Go to Courses and click on the Join Code for the course card

Share the join code onscreen in the room. Click on the code to copy it.

Ask your students to go: https://getkita.io/school/join Replace school with your school name–find this in your URL.

Students enter the code or if using the link the link is automatically entered.

Select the option that applies:
I'm new: new students are asked for their First name and Last name and then given a temporary password to save. They are asked to reset their password at the end of the classroom session.
I have a Kita login: allows existing students to login and go directly into the course.
"I want to add students to the school (individually & spreadsheet)."
Add an individual student to the school

From the dashboard, click Students in the main navigation.
Select Add Student.
Select Add Individual Student.
Complete the form for the student and set whether the student is over 13. If the student is under 13 confirm parental permission.
Select Save.
Add multiple students using a spreadsheet

From Students, select Upload Student List.
Download the template csv file for use with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.

Prepare and upload a CSV file with one row per student, using these column headings.
Upload the completed CSV file.
If you encounter errors check the row identified in the status (as indicated). Lookout for non-character spaces after a names or column titles.

Select Finish.
Select Download Credentials.
Select the option to Include passwords. If you did not define your own passwords.

Select Download.
Use the downloaded spreadsheet to tell your students their usernames and temporary passwords in class. Students will be asked to reset their passwords when they login for the first time.
"I want to to join Kita and enrol on courses before a class session."
Use this method if you would like to set up your class in advance.
This is especially helpful when you want students to join Kita and enrol on multiple courses in one step.

From the dashboard, click Students in the main navigation.
On Students, open the Groups & Sub Groups tab.
Click Create, then select Create Group.
Name the group and save. Students see this name when they join, so include the year and the subject.

To setup group course enrolments before a class session.
a. Select actions
b. Manage enrolments

Share your group Join Code
Send your group join code via email or school messaging services (e.g., Teams, VLE/LMS). Students can also use the code at: https://getkita.io/login/join

The expiry date and time are shown underneath the code.
